- 2.2.2 Shared Key: The client sends an authentication request to the AP. The AP then processes this request and generates a challenge text packet, which it sends down to the client. The client is then required to encrypt the packet utilizing its WEP key and send it back up to the AP. The AP then determines if it can decipher the packet it was given. Based upon this test the AP will then send either a pass or fail in the authentication response packet to the client who then will be allowed or disallowed to continue to the association phase.
